Drawing on Peace
Observations of United Nations Peacekeeping
by George Gittoes
"This series is selected from several hundred drawings made in the
field during 1993 and 1994.
"Preparing to leave for my first Peacekeeping destination - Somalia,
in January 1993 - I realised I would have to devise a simple artist's kit
which would survive the gruelling conditions of outdoor life with a forever
moving infantry Battalion. My solution was a nylon qip carry folder with
a ream of standard size drawing paper - 62 cm x 42 cm - and a good supply
of 6B pencils.
"In Somalia I shared the life of the soldiers - meaning that I had
to carry my food, water, sleeping and other gear on long marches - rarely
returning to base camp. Had I made my art equipment any more complicated
or heavy I would have been forced to discard it.
"The diary notes, began as simple recordings of essential information
on the subjects, but soon developed into an important part of the finished
drawings."
This book was compiled and produced by Gabrielle Dalton and George Gittoes,
with the assistance of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs. This
limited edition portfolio book was produced to support the Australian Government's
submission to the United Nations to mount an exhibition in New York which
would feature George's sketches, paintings and photographs.
The submission to the UN was unsuccessful. The exhibition was sucessfully
mounted by the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT)
and is touring Australia presently.
